P0016 DTC Information
DTC description
The CKP sensor is installed to the left side of the rear of the cylinder block. The sensor rotor is fixed on the crankshaft. There are 56 notches spaced 6° apart and a 30° opening. Top dead center of cylinder No. 1 can be detected through this opening. The CMP sensor is installed on the timing chain sprocket cover on the cylinder head front side. The CMP sensor detects 5 projections in total per 1 engine cycle. The timing chain sprocket has 4 projections evenly spaced 90° apart and 1 reference projection. By detecting the opening with the CKP sensor and the 1 reference projection with the CMP sensor, the ECM determines compression top dead center of cylinder No. 1 and makes sure that they correlate with each other. If the ECM detects that both signals are not synchronized, the DTC is set.
Condition for setting the DTC
Preconditions
・The ignition switch is ON. ・The engine is running. ・CKP sensor signal pulses are detected. ・CMP sensor signal pulses are detected. ・DTCs P0335, P0336, P0340, P0651, and P1655 are not set.
Setting conditions
・The ECM detects that the CKP sensor signal and CMP sensor signal are not synchronized.
Action taken when DTC sets
・Failure is indicated* in the monitor on the machine, or the diagnostic light illuminates.
Note: *Depending on the machine manufacturer, a failure may not be indicated.
P0016 Diagnostics
Note: This DTC is set when the engine ignition timing is improper. Incorrect installation of the timing gear, flywheel, or camshaft is most likely the cause.
Connect a trouble diagnosis scan tool.
Turn OFF the ignition switch for 30 seconds or more.
Start the engine. If the engine does not start, crank the engine for 10 seconds.
Observe the DTC information with a trouble diagnosis scan tool. Is DTC P0335, P0336, or P0340 set?
Yes
Go to the applicable DTC diagnosis.
No
⇒Go to CKP sensor and CMP sensor inspection.
CKP sensor and CMP sensor inspection
・Damaged sensor ・Loose or improperly installed sensor ・Excessive clearance ・Foreign material passing between the sensor and the sensor rotor or between the sensor and the chain sprocket ・Damaged sensor rotor or chain sprocket ・Loose or improperly installed sensor rotor or chain sprocket
Inspect the CKP sensor and CMP sensor for the above conditions.
Repair or replace as necessary.
Procedure completion
⇒Timing gear and chain inspection
Timing gear and chain inspection
・Improperly installed timing gear or chain ・Timing chain tensioner malfunction ・Excessive play in timing chain ・Timing chain that has jumped teeth
Inspect the timing gear or chain condition for the above conditions.
Repair or replace as necessary.
Procedure completion
⇒Go to Repair verification.
Repair verification
Clear the DTC with a trouble diagnosis scan tool.
Turn OFF the ignition switch for 30 seconds or more.
Start the engine.
Perform a test-run under the conditions for running the DTC.
Observe the DTC information with a trouble diagnosis scan tool. A DTC should not be set.
