How to Cat E 2023C to View and Clear Active Diagnostic Codes

The Active Diagnostic Codes function provides information to warn the vehicle operator of potential problems and indicates the nature of the problem to the service technician. The codes on this screen are occurring as they are being displayed.

Accessing

To run the Active Diagnostic Codes function:

Select “Active Diagnostic Codes” from the Diagnostics menu –OR–

Push the F3 key (if the default function keys are set) –OR–

Click the Active Diagnostic Codes icon on the toolbar (if default is set) .

 

The Active Diagnostic Codes screen is displayed.

Note: Active Diagnostic Codes can also be accessed by clicking the Active Codes button on the dashboard. The active codes will be displayed in a popup box as they appear in the Active Diagnostic Codes screen and can be accessed from any screen in which the dashboard is displayed; however, troubleshooting is not possible from the popup.

 

Screen Layout

The Active Diagnostic Codes screen has the following areas:

 

Display Area

The ECM name displays as a category above its list of diagnostic code(s). Columns in the display area provide the following information:

Code – code numbers used to identify the diagnostic codes, listed in numeric order

Description – brief explanation of the problem identified by the code

Occ. – For some products, this column (Occurrences), which lists the number of times a problem has occurred, is displayed after the Description column.

 

Include All ECMs Checkbox

When the “Include All ECMs” checkbox is selected, active codes from all active ECMs are retrieved and displayed. These codes are grouped according to the ECM from which the code was retrieved. When a single ECM is detected on the data link, this checkbox is disabled.

 

Buttons

The buttons available may include:

Reset All – When clicked, this button clears all active diagnostic codes. This button is only enabled when the ECM supports this feature.

Troubleshoot Code – When diagnostic procedures are available for the selected code, clicking this button connects the user to the Component Based Troubleshooting Website. From there, the user can access SIS Links for more information.

Troubleshoot Symptom – When diagnostic procedures are available for the selected code, clicking this button connects the user to the Component Based Troubleshooting Website. From there, the user can access further information on symptoms based on the description provided in the Description column.

 

 

Purpose

The Clear All button clears all the logged diagnostic codes and all logged event codes simultaneously for ECMs that support this function. If more than one ECM is available on the data link, all logged diagnostic and event codes on the data link can be cleared, or all logged diagnostic and events codes on the current ECM can be cleared.

 

Instructions

To clear all logged codes with one ECM:

Click the Clear All button. If only one ECM is available on the data link, a message displays a message similar to the following: “Are you sure you want to clear all the codes of [ECM]?”

Click Yes to clear all of the logged diagnostic and event codes. Click No to return to the last active screen without clearing the logged diagnostic and event codes.

 

To clear all logged codes with multiple ECMs:

Click the Clear All button. If multiple ECMs are available on the data link, the Select ECM dialog box is displayed.

To clear all logged diagnostic and event codes from the current ECM, select the Current ECM radio button. To clear all logged diagnostic and event codes from all ECMs on the data link, select the All ECMs radio button.

Click Clear to clear all logged diagnostic and event codes. Click Cancel to return to the last active screen without clearing the codes.
