1 Engine control system check

Refer to “51.Engine Control 1A.Troubleshooting(4JJ3 with DPD) Diagnostic system check-engine controls”.

 

2 Prioritized DTC check

1) Connect the scan tool.

2) Turn OFF the ignition switch for 1 minute or more.

3) Crank the engine for 15 seconds.

4) Observe the DTC information with a scan tool. Is a DTC set?

Yes

Go to the applicable DTC diagnosis.

 

No

=>Go to Fuel pressure check when cranking.

 

3 Fuel pressure check when cranking

1) Verify that the fuel tank has enough fuel and that the fuel quality is good.

 

Note:

  • If the vehicle runs out of fuel, air may be trapped in the fuel system.

2) While cranking the engine for 5 seconds, observe the Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) parameter on the scan tool. When cranking, is the Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) parameter more than or equal to the specified value?

Value: 20 MPa { 2,900 psi }

Yes

=>Go to Sensor inspection.

 

No

=>Go to Fuel system inspection.

 

4 Fuel system inspection

1) Inspect while referring to Fuel system inspection. Is the result normal?

Refer to “51.Engine Control 1A.Troubleshooting(4JJ3 with DPD) fuel system check”.

Yes

=>Go to FRP reduction valve resistance check.

 

No

Repair or replace as necessary.

=>Go to Repair verification.

 

5 FRP reduction valve resistance check

1) Disconnect the FRP reduction valve harness connector (E29).

Refer to “RHD Engine Control (4JJ3 with DPD)” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Refer to “LHD Engine Control (4JJ3 with DPD)” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

2) Measure the resistance of the FRP reduction valve with a DMM. Is the resistance within the specified range?

Value: 0.4 to 0.7 Ω At 20°C {68°F}

 

Yes

=>Go to FRP reduction valve circuit inspection.

 

No

Replace the fuel rail.

Refer to “1.Engine 1C.Fuel System(4JJ3 with DPD) common rail (fuel rail) removal”.

Refer to “1.Engine 1C.Fuel System(4JJ3 with DPD) common rail (fuel rail) installation”.

=>Go to Repair verification.

 

6 FRP reduction valve circuit inspection

1) Inspect for poor connections at the FRP reduction valve harness connector (pins 1 and 2 of E29). Is the connection status normal?

2) Inspect for poor connections at the ECM harness connector (pins 3 and 4 of E2). Is the connection status normal?

3) Inspect the circuit between the ECM (pins 3 and 4 of E2) and the FRP reduction valve (pins 1 and 2 of E29) for high resistance. Is the result normal?

Refer to “LHD Engine Control (4JJ3 with DPD)” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Yes

=>Go to FRP sensor circuit inspection.

 

No

Repair the circuit or connection as necessary.

=>Go to Repair verification.

 

7 FRP sensor circuit inspection

1) Inspect for poor connections at the FRP sensor harness connector (pins 1, 2, and 3 of E45). Is the connection status normal?

2) Inspect for poor connections at the ECM harness connector (pins 17, 27, and 29 of E2, and pin 30 of E3). Is the connection status normal?

3) Inspect the circuit between the ECM (pins 17, 27, and 29 of E2, and pin 30 of E3) and the FRP sensor (pins 1, 2, and 3 of E45) for high resistance. Is the result normal?

Refer to “RHD Engine Control (4JJ3 with DPD)” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Refer to “LHD Engine Control (4JJ3 with DPD)” in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

 

4) Are all of the results normal?

Yes

Replace the fuel rail.

Refer to “1.Engine 1C.Fuel System(4JJ3 with DPD) common rail (fuel rail) removal”.

Refer to “1.Engine 1C.Fuel System(4JJ3 with DPD) common rail (fuel rail) installation”.

=>Go to Repair verification.

 

No

Repair the circuit or connection as necessary.

=>Go to Repair verification.

 

8 Sensor inspection

1) Inspect whether the display of the following sensor input value is normal. Is the result normal?

  • Engine coolant temperature sensor
  • Barometric pressure sensor
  • Boost pressure sensor
  • Intake throttle position sensor

 

Note:

  • Use the scan tool data list or measured value of a vehicle which is considered to be normal.

Yes

=>Go to Engine mechanical inspection.

 

No

Repair or replace as necessary.

 

=>Go to Repair verification.

 

9 Engine mechanical inspection

1) Inspect the other possibilities of the non-starting of the engine for the following.

  • The engine mechanical timing is off.
  • Improper installation of the flywheel and CKP sensor
  • Excessive clogging in the air intake system
  • Excessive clogging in the exhaust system
  • Poor engine compression
  • Water or gasoline contamination in fuel

2) Repair as necessary.

Procedure completion

=>Go to Repair verification.

 

10 Repair verification

1) Reconnect all of the disconnected harness connectors.

2) Turn OFF the ignition switch for 1 minute or more.

3) Start the engine. Does the engine start?

Yes

The system is normal.

 

No

=>Go to Prioritized DTC check.
