The information in this Service Bulletin provides you with the procedures:
For the correct charging of the batteries
For the correct method to jump-start the vehicle
To allow adequate battery box ventilation during the charge cycle
NOTE: This information relates to:
– CX Flagship conventional combines, with an enclosed battery box
– CR Flagship rotary combines, with an enclosed battery box
WARNING
Explosion hazard!
When you charge a battery, place a battery on a maintenance charger, or jump start the machine, remove the battery box cover to allow for proper ventilation.
Failure to comply could result in death or serious injury.
WARNING
Battery acid causes burns. Batteries contain sulfuric acid.
Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing. Antidote (external): Flush with water. Antidote (eyes): flush with water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention immediately. Antidote (internal): Drink large quantities of water or milk. Do not induce vomiting. Seek medical attention immediately.
Failure to comply could result in death or serious injury.
Unit preparation
NOTE: The four reference points to the unit are the left-hand side, the right-hand side, the front of the unit, and the back of the unit. These reference points apply to someone that faces the direction of travel from a standing position that is behind the unit.

Batteries – General information:
The CX flagship combines and/or CR flagship combines are equipped with two 12 Volt batteries (107Ah). There is a voltage equalizer in the connection between the two batteries.
The upper battery – battery #1, is for all general functions. For example: lighting, ventilation, powered machine settings, display screen etc.
The lower battery – battery #2, is specifically for the production of 24 Volts on the combine. the 24 Volt supply is for starting the engine, and for the urea Dosing Control Unit (DCU).
NOTE: As part of a running change during MY17, NEW HOLLAND introduced batteries with a battery vent system on CX flagship combines and/or CR flagship combines from production series 1987 onward. It is good practice to follow the below steps for batteries with a vent system and for batteries without a vent system.
Battery voltage equalizer:
The voltage of the two batteries is kept the same by the voltage equalizer. If the voltage level of battery #2 drops below the voltage level of battery #1, the equalizer will use the power of the battery #1 to equalize the voltage levels of the two batteries.
However, if the voltage of the battery #1 drops below the voltage of the battery #2, the equalizer will not boost battery #1.
Batteries – Maintenance:
When you replace a battery make sure that you connect the ground cable to the negative (-) terminal on the battery, and you connect the positive (+) cable to the positive (+) terminal on the battery.
When you disconnect a battery, disconnect the negative (-) cable first.
When you connect a battery, connect the negative (-) cable last.
NOTE: NEW HOLLAND recommends that whenever you service the batteries, you thoroughly clean all dust and debris from the inside of the battery box.
WARNING
Explosion hazard!
When you charge a battery, place a battery on a maintenance charger, or jump start the machine, remove the battery box cover to allow for proper ventilation.
Failure to comply could result in death or serious injury.
W1455B
When the combine is not in use for long period of time, you must charge the batteries every 8 to 10 weeks with a maximum of 6 A current. Charge for a period of 24hours.
NOTE: A battery that is not in regular use will slowly discharge, a discharged battery can freeze at low ambient temperatures. When a battery freezes, internal damage to the battery will occur. Do not attempt to charge a frozen battery.
Battery Charging / battery jump-starting:
WARNING
Explosion hazard!
When you jump-start the machine, connect and disconnect jumper cables exactly as shown in the operator’s manual. DO NOT connect jumper cables to the machine battery terminals. Make sure no persons are near the connecting points before you start the engine. Start the engine from the operator’s seat.
Failure to comply could result in death or serious injury.
W1456A
NOTE: Connecting a battery charger or an auxiliary battery to a fully discharged battery that has an open circuit can cause a spark inside the battery. A spark inside the battery can cause a battery explosion.
To safe charge a battery when you remove the batteries from the combine:
Connect the ground cable of the battery charger to the negative (-) terminal on the battery.
Connect the positive (+) cable of the battery charger to the positive (+) terminal on the battery.
Turn the 12 Volt battery charger ON.
When you achieve a full charge:
Turn the 12 Volt battery charger OFF.
Remove the battery charger negative (-) lead from the negative (-) terminal on the battery.
Remove the battery charger positive (+) lead from the positive (+) terminal on the battery.
To safe charge a battery when the batteries remain on the combine:
Attach the positive (+) lead of the battery charger to the upper jump stud post.
Attach the negative (-) lead of the battery charger to the lower jump stud post.
NOTE: The jump stud posts are also indicated with colors:
(+) = red
(-) = black
Turn the battery disconnect switch to the ON position.
Turn the 12 Volt battery charger ON.
NOTE: Pay close attention to the battery terminals. The decal on the battery box depicts the correct terminal combinations for both 12 Volts and/or 24 Volts.
NOTE: The battery charger only charges battery #1. The equalizer then use the power of battery #1 to charge battery #2.
When you achieve a full charge:
Turn the 12 Volt battery charger OFF.
Remove the battery charger negative (-) lead from the lower jump stud post.
Remove the battery charger positive (+) lead from the upper jump stud post.
